In 1840 Barford and Perkins started manufacturing rollers/compactors and agricultural equipment going on to be market leaders in this area.
A short time later in 1850 Aveling & Porter commenced production of steamrollers going on to be a giant of the industry.
Although market leading companies, in 1932 both Barford and Perkins and Aveling & Porter experienced financial difficulties which resulted in ownership being transferred to Ruston and Hornsby resulting in the creation of Aveling Barford in February 1934.
Success followed for Aveling Barford and by the late 30’s they made over 75% of the rollers in Britain and were world leaders in their field.
During the war years they transfer their engineering know how to supply munitions and gun carriers. During this period they also made calf dozers – small Bulldozers.
